March Update Blog

ree

It has been a busy March, though you may not have noticed.

Immortal of the Saltless Sea

Has launched. What a fun process. I watched it climb up to #26 on Amazon's "Sci-Fi & Fantasy reads in less than an hour" list. If you received this, you probably have a copy. If you have time, could you spare a few minutes to drop a review on Good Reads and/or Amazon? It would help. If you do, you might be the first to do so. I only ask for honest reviews, but I hope you liked it. If, for some reason, you misplaced the email, here is a link that will allow you access to the story for free. It is also available on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble for a buck if you feel like sending me a little support.

Nights of the Purple Sky

The old saying goes, "The Third Time's a Charm." I started over once again. I tried freewriting this story, and it got out of hand. There were too many characters, and the plot started to go wonky. I decided to outline my book, build character profiles, map out a plot, etc. Well, once I did it, the writing became much more manageable. I also have greatly simplified the book. It shouldn't be noticeable to the reader, but it will make for a cleaner story.

If you remember, this was going to be book 1 of a series. I've changed that up and made it stand-alone, but I plan on writing in this world in the future—most likely the series that I was hoping for. But I've decided that the quality of that series may be better if I shake out the kinks first. This book will be ready to launch in Quarter 1, 2026.

New Short Story

All for Sister Marisa is finished, developmental edited, and copy edited. It just sits on my desk patiently, waiting for me to find a place to hang it. I'm debating a Substack release, selling it as a stand-alone, or looking for an anthology to try to sell it to. The few people who have read it say it is the best thing I've written. I like this story. It is about a young man, Eduardo, who joins a religious monastic society to punish himself for the death of his sister and follows his last few days in that organization. It wrestles with themes of free will and religious organizations doing bad things. If you have an opinion on how I should get this out, I'm open to suggestions.

New Short Story #2

I've been commissioned to write a short story for an anthology of Supernatural themes. That story, Tarik of Kadikoy, is currently being polished for submission to the editor. The Anthology will be sold on Kickstarter soon! In this story, we follow the Tattoo Artist to Turkish Futbol players as he struggles with deep life questions and how the spiritual elements fight for his control. Few have read this story, but those who have given it two thumbs up.

What I've Read Recently

In March, I finished Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana. I received this as a recommendation after I finished The Lions of al-Rassan last fall. I'll be publishing a review of this on my blog. Short summation--Read this book if you like fantasy and superb writing. GGK, in my opinion does a great job of using words on a page to paint beautiful pictures.

I've also finished book 2 of Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy, Before They Are Hanged, and am about halfway through book 3, Last Argument of Kings. I do not believe I've read anyone who masters character voice as well as Abercrombie. I'll also be publishing another review of the Trilogy, hopefully soon.

Final Words

A few of you have asked me, "How can I help?" The best thing you can do is to share my website or point people you think would like my stuff to my Instagram or Facebook page, M.B. Everett, write reviews on the platforms that readers visit, and continue to engage with my author persona via social media or email. That last does more to motivate me than you can imagine.

See you next month!
